Winter Farm Update & CSA Preview

By Chris Iberle, Food Hub Manager

Soon, 12 new farmers will join the Seattle Tilth Farm Works community. With all of our farmers from last year returning and a year-round Seattle Youth Garden Works crew at our other educational farms in Seattle’s University District as well as at the Rainier Beach Urban Farm & Wetlands, we’re going to be hoppin’ in 2014!

Farm Happenings

The new farmers at Seattle Tilth Farm Works (STFW) start training on February 8. They’ll be sharing agricultural knowledge and experience rooted in lands and cultures from across the world. We’re also welcoming 120 new chicks to the farm in Auburn! With a new hoophouse, increased acreage coming into production and a host of seasoned STFW farmers returning, we’re looking forward to a big season at the farm.

Chicks

This winter at our Rainier Beach farm, we’re planting and live-staking hundreds of native plants to create water cleansing buffers between our food growing and wetland areas. We worked with our partners at Steel Wheel Farm to plow a new garden area beyond the wetland buffers for a new strawberry planting we’re undertaking in February.

Community Supported Agriculture (CSA)

Be a part of the action when you join our Community Supported Agriculture program this year. Sign-ups start February 3!

Members pay up front before the season starts and provide our farmers with capital to buy seeds and supplies. In return, you’ll receive a weekly box full of tasty, delicious and organically grown produce for twenty weeks from June-October. When you join our CSA, you’re building relationships with new farmers and making an investment in delicious food grown on local farms.
