Ground Up works with youth ages 14 – 19 and focuses on food literacy, food security and environmental management as key driving factors of a strong, just and healthy community. The 12 week curriculum uses hands-on learning that promotes curiosity and builds their skills as critical thinkers, active community leaders and change agents.
Each workshop incorporates a Soil, Self and Community theme. Trainers and youth work on a cycle of learn, practice and teach.
Core learning areas include:
- Composting and Soil Life Cycle
- Cooking and Kitchen Skills
- Food Justice
- Personal Development and Leadership Training
- Communication and Media
- Organic Growing
Funding from RaVE helped bring this this program to the Rainier Beach Urban Farm and Wetland and put together gardening kits for local residents.
