Although the garden is wet, and not much beyond the grass is green, students at South Shore School are still having garden classes each week. While there is little hands on work to be done outside in the garden, it is a great time of year to bring the garden “indoors”. Students from Pre K – 4th grade have been learning about food, what it takes to make healthy soil, and doing hands on investigation of worm bins and red wriggler worms. 5th and 7th grade students have been learning about sustainability and food miles, while mapping the distance their breakfast ingredients traveled from farmer’s field to breakfast table. Everyone is excited to get outside and to get growing. Some overwintering broccoli in the garden is bringing us hope for a bountiful season to come.
